Groundwork

Creating a flexible, finished space reclaimed from a previously unfinished storage cellar, the project capitalizes on the space’s inherent formal character by integrating rough, unfinished elements into the architectural design. Framing and accentuating exposed stone foundation walls within a more contemporary design provides a rich contrast of tone and texture, and affords the space a broader sense of context: a nod to its subterranean setting.

The space opens to the rest of the house through a pronounced stair opening, allowing for a direct visual connection and creating an extension of the home’s finished space and natural circulation.
